They didn't. From Dec 1941 when the German's gamble to take the USSR in one
swoop was stopped at Moscow, there was only going to be one outcome. The
Germans made some spectacular gains however nothing was conclusive. The
British and Soviet economies were too stong for the Germans. The USA
entering the war quickened the end. Although the British A bomb would have
been available by ~1947 and the end of the European war would have been
about then if Germany never declared war on the USA.
