An 8-year-old girl whose parents had befriended Pfc. Robert Garwood of
the Marines testified today in Superior Court that the convicted
collaborator molested and tried to rape her after taking her for an
ice cream cone in his automobile.

The youngster testified before a jury of eight men and four women on
the opening day of Private Garwood's trial on charges of first degree
sexual offense, attempted rape, attempted first-degree sexual offense
and taking indecent liberties with a child.

The 35-year-old marine has pleaded not guilty, and his attorneys said
that he had an alibi for the day of the alleged offense. However, Joan
Deaton, a drugstore employee testified later that she saw Private
Garwood and the child together in the drugstore where she worked in
Swansboro on the evening of Aug. 7, the date of the alleged incident.

Several other witnesses corroborated the child's statements in
testimony this afternoon, including the girl's mother, an Onslow
County sheriff's detective and a Raleigh psychiatrist who examined the
child last September.
